Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about clinical supervision requirements, the licensure process, and working with ABHC.

01

What are the supervision requirements for a registered social work intern in Florida?

Florida requires registered clinical social work interns to complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervision spread across at least 100 weeks, along with 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy with clients. You must attend at least one hour of supervision every two weeks.

To begin the process, visit the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling website to review licensure requirements, apply, and submit required documentation. After completing your supervised experience and passing the appropriate examination, you will be issued your license.

Florida Administrative Code, Rule 64B4-2.002, F.A.C.

02

What does the supervision experience with you involve?

As your supervisor, you will complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervision with me over at least 100 weeks, in addition to 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy with clients. We will meet for one hour of supervision every two weeks.

Florida's Administrative Code allows up to four hours of supervision per month, and these requirements are designed to ensure you receive the training and experience necessary to become a fully licensed mental health professional.

03

How can I determine if my current job qualifies for clinical supervision?

The Florida Board of Clinical Social Work determines that supervision hours count when you complete at least 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy under a qualified supervisor. Your work must consist of clinical social work services, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of clients.

If you are unsure whether your current position meets these criteria, reach out through my contact page and I am happy to help you evaluate your situation.

04

Do I still need supervision after completing my post-master's experience and passing the exam?

Yes. You must remain under active supervision until the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work officially issues your full Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license certificate.

According to Rule 64B4-3.008 of the Florida Administrative Code, any registered intern practicing clinical social work must continue to meet all board supervision requirements — even after completing post-master's hours and passing the ASWB Clinical Exam. You cannot legally practice independently or discontinue supervision meetings until you receive your LCSW license.
